Expertise & Interests

Overview / specialty        I am constructing a detailed record of past volcanism in Greenland (specifically Holocene) through the identification of new tephra (volcanic ash) deposits in the NGRIP, GRIP, NEEM, EGRIP, Renland ice core records. The wider objective is to cross date marine and ice cores using common tephra deposits using unique geochemical characteristics of ash layers. This provides an opportunity to examine climate records in distal locations and to refine terrestrial and marine age models.

This work relies on specialist analytical techniques including electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and laser ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS).
