In the joint German-South African interdisciplinary BMBF-funded project "Tracing Human and Climate impacts in South Africa" (TRACES) a three-year position for a motivated and enthusiastic PhD student in the field of Physical Geography or related discipline is available at the Physical Geography Department of the University of Greifswald, Germany.

Description

The successful candidate will work on surface sediment samples and short sediment cores from the Richards Bay area (South Africa) in order to identify paleoenvironmental/-climatic changes and anthropogenic impacts on this ecosystem using geochemical and geophysical methods.

The PhD student will closely work together with other subprojects in TRACES which for example investigate the biological consequences of the anthropogenic impact. Participation in a field campaign as well as an extended stay at a South African partner university (University of KwaZuluNatal) is planned. Presentations at workshops and conferences and preparation of manuscripts for scientific publications are expected.

Requirements

- Master (MSc) in Physical Geography or a related field
- Experience in sedimentology and paleoenvironmental reconstruction
- Strong English communication skills and proficiency in writing
- Willingness to participate in field work in South Africa

Logistics

The starting date is 1 July 2018. Duration: 36 months.
Salary and benefits are commensurate with the federal German employee scale TV-L E13 (66%).
