GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany, is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10%) and is one of the leading international institutions in the field of marine sciences.

The research unit "Paleoceanography" of the research division "Ocean and Climate Dynamics" is offering a PhD student/Doctoral candidate position starting on 15 June 2018. The position offers the possibility to attain a doctoral degree in natural sciences.


The successful candidate will perform paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic reconstructions of the North Pacific region. After participation in a ship expedition with RV SONNE to the North Pacific in summer 2018, the tasks include to reconstruct the spatial and temporal changes in near-surface and subsurface water temperatures in the North Pacific, salinity, thermocline depth, and water mass stratification of the upper oceanic surface using geochemical proxy parameters, e.g. in planktic microfossils.


The activities involve the application of state-of-the-art methods for isotopic and trace element analysis. Further tasks include the construction of the chronostratigraphy of the sediment cores and the creation of further sedimentological and geochemical datasets. The tasks also includes the coordination of the analytical work, the guidance of student workers, and the coordination of scientific collaboration among the project participants. The publication of scientific results is required.


Admission requirements are a Master of Science or Diploma degree in the field of (marine) geosciences or related disciplines, and an excellent publication and presentation performance. Further prerequisites are the willingness to participate in the planned North Pacific expedition in July/August 2018. Knowledge of the abovementioned analytical methods (MS, ICP-OES) is desirable. The ability to work in a team, excellent communication skills, and outstanding knowledge of English writing and language are required.


The position is available for a funding period of 26 months. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a part-time position, according to 75% of a full-time equivalent. The position can not be split. The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).
