The Environment Department at the University of York, UK, conducts world-leading research on topics of global environmental importance.

Their research is highly interdisciplinary across the natural and social sciences, ranging from atmospheric chemistry to environmental economics and policy analysis. To strengthen their research, they created this departmental Research Fellowship to attract an excellent scientist with an exciting research program.

Logistics

The role is based at University of York - Heslington Campus.

This is a full-time, fixed term position with a salary in the range of £38,832-£47,722 a year, plus a research budget of up to £10,000 per year. This research fellowship is offered from 1 February 2018 (or soon after) for three and a half years (until July 2021). Candidates must be available to take up the post at this time.

Description

Successful candidates will be expected to pursue an independent program of innovative research with the potential to result in a research output (publication) of world-leading quality in terms of originality, significance and rigour. Successful candidates will also be expected, within the time-frame of the Fellowship and with the support of an elected mentor(s), to apply for a prestigious externally-funded intermediate fellowship to continue their research career at the University.  Should any suitable vacancy arise in the Environment Department during the tenure of the fellowship the fellow will be invited to be considered for the post.

Responsibilities

The main duties and responsibilities of the role are to lead on the production of research outcomes and outputs, to participate actively in the planning and management of research projects, including supervising the work of others and providing expert advice and guidance and to contribute to and/or lead the obtaining of external research funding.

Requirements

The opportunity is open to individuals with a PhD or equivalent qualification in a subject area of relevance to the Environment Department and those with interdisciplinary research interests are especially encouraged to apply. Some degree of previous professional experience at another institution, academic or non-academic, will be looked on favourably.

Successful candidates will be expected to have the skills, experience and motivation necessary to conduct excellent, world-leading research. Specifically candidates should be able to demonstrate well developed analytical skills, knowledge in relevant subjects to engage in high quality research, knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies, research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance the department's research strategy and goals as well as competency to conduct individual and collaborative research projects.

Candidates are required to seek the support of at least one academic mentor in the Environment Department as part of the application process. If the applicant is currently at the University of York, then (s)he will need to articulate how this proposal will further his/her independent research career. As part of the application, candidates will also be asked to provide a brief plan of no more than 500 words outlining their intended research during the fellowship and cite up to five of their most important research outputs to date.
